Although, you may not be aware of the terminology FTP, it is an important tool that is beneficial during the development of a site. FTP is the abbreviated form commonly used to refer to File Transfer Protocol. This tool is an application that enables users to relocate files from one location to another location.
Users create the pages for their web sites on their personal machines. Therefore, with the aid of a text editing application or any other web pages editing tool, the users are required to relocate these pages to the server, which is used for hosting their site. File Transfer Protocol is the primary method adopted for this purpose.
Several FTP applications can be easily downloaded from the Internet. While few of these applications do not charge users, some applications are available for trial before making the decision to buy.
Working with FTP
Before using the FTP, you need to download ftp client application to the hard drive. In addition, users need to setup an account with the host server. After opening the application, several blanks need to be filled by the users. The primary blank is the Profile Name, which is simply the name of your site. Some individuals choose to refer to this as My home page for convenience.
This is followed by the Address/Host Name, which is the server name where the home page is uploaded. This information is available from the hosting service provider. Its appearance is similar to ftp.hostname.com
Some other important fields required are the User Name and Password. These remain the same as the ones used for signing up with the hosting service provider whose server you are using to host your site.
It is recommended that users use the save password to avoid entering the password each time you access the application. Moreover, users may consider accessing the startup properties to modify the primary folder to the location where the home page files are saved.
After making the necessary setting modifications, click on OK, which automatically connects you to the host server. Users can assume that the process is complete when the files appear on the screen’s right side.
Users are advised to create the same folders on the hosting service provider’s host as the ones created on their machines. This simplifies the process of uploading the correct files to the right folders.
