I do not know what it is about social media, but it seems to bring creeps out of the woodwork. Now, both guys and girls are guilty of some of these Facebook faux pas, so I am not trying to be sexist here. I just do not understand how people think boundaries do not exist online. In the real world, most of these people would not think about approaching someone and saying things like this to their face, at least not without drinking copious amounts of alcohol first. However, online they feel like they can say or do whatever, no questions asked. Well, I am questioning!
Here are three things that Facebook is definitely NOT for:
- Finding a girlfriend/boyfriend: Why is it that people think they can proposition other people on Facebook ad come out of it with a successful date, let alone a successful relationship? A friend of mine recently had a random man try to add her several times on Facebook. She rejected him every time, even though they had friends in common. He sent her a message today:
Her: I am sorry, but do we know each other?
Him: We have friends in common, so yes. You are very beautiful we should do happy hr sometime.
Her: Out of curiosity how do you know (insert friends names)?
Him: lets talk offline grab some frozen yogurt later whats your cell#?
Her: I am off the market.
Right before she blocks him…
Him: ok. let me know when you break up k
Well, that went over well, don’t you think? Not! Why oh why do people think this could be successful? Relationships require a real connection and more than just a look at a profile picture. Speaking of profile pictures, his was a photo of himself standing in front of his bathroom mirror. Does he not have one real picture of himself?
- Breaking up: Whether it is a breakup of a romantic relationship or just a friendship, it should not be done via Facebook! Why would you want to include all the people you know in this difficult and potentially explosive aspect of your life? By all rights it should be done in person, but even over the phone is better than posted all over Facebook for all your mutual friends to see! Why the drama?
- Save the drama for your mama: Speaking of drama, Facebook is not a place to vent your arguments with other people. Keep that private, please! And another drama-ish thing people do on Facebook (ostensibly to get attention) is write those cryptic status updates like:
- I can’t believe that happened…
- My life is over.
- Why me?
- The things I put up with…
Facebook is supposed to be a way for people to stay connected with their friends and share their interests. It is not a dating site, a drama fest, or a place to break up. Can you imagine what Facebook would be like if it was actually used the way it was supposed to be? I know it would save me a lot of scrolling time!
